This last month, we have witnessed great tragedies – several through Mother Nature in the form of hurricanes and earthquakes and the latest through a horrendous act of violence at the hand of a gunman. Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts are with all those impacted.

And now, The Buzz………
Advisory - All 9th grade students are participating in Advisory class, meetings regularly lead by teachers who are working to develop the curriculum in conjunction with Connect With Kids, a recognized educational media company.

The program was created to foster stronger relationships between students and faculty, support healthy social and emotional development, promote academic achievement and assist our freshmen with their transition to high school.

The goals include:

• Develop close and caring relationships that build trust between staff and students.
• Provide academic support that helps students further develop key skills and knowledge;
• Enrich the curriculum with activities that support learning and development in areas that are not addressed in regular coursework.
• Build school culture by helping to create and sustain a positive, supportive community among staff and students.

So far, Advisory has gotten great feedback from teachers and students.

Tech is a Stand-Out - Brooklyn Tech - #2 nationally – in the 2018 Niche Standout Schools which recognizes public schools that are making a difference in their community. The ranking is based on rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents using data from the U.S. Department of Education. Ranking factors include school diversity, graduation rates and state test scores for economically disadvantaged and minority students, SAT/ACT scores, and the quality of colleges that students consider. The list is limited to only schools with 1) at least 50% of students identified by the school as economically disadvantaged and 2) a Niche Overall Grade of B or higher.

Forensics Lab - We started researching designs for a new Forensics Lab. We received a grant from the Borough President’s Office to build a state of the art laboratory for use in our Law and Society major. Our current lab is next to the Moot Court in the basement. It is our intent to revamp the space and bring in state of the art equipment. We are scheduled to walk through the newest lab at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the next few weeks.

Weston Research Scholars Program – Students have entered the Siemens Math, Science and Technology competition. Three seniors and one junior submitted their individual projects and one team of three juniors submitted a team project. This competition is one of the most highly recognized STEM events. The Weston Research Scholars Program spans over three years providing instruction and support to students interested in doing high level independent research. We have 65 students in this challenging program.
