New Jersey Alumni Group Meets in Newark

Approximately 50 members of the New Jersey Alumni Group met for brunch on Sunday, October 16th at the Newark Airport Marriott. Alan Fitter ’65 made the welcoming remarks.

Alumni Foundation CEO Matt Mandery ’61 spoke briefly as did Tech Principal Randy Asher. Members were pleased to hear of the school’s efforts to modernize the majors to meet the demands of a 21st century global economy as well as the accomplishments 2011 graduates who secured more than $130 million in scholarships.

Tech Hall of Famer Marvin Kitman ’47 was the keynote speaker. Kitman, a prolific author and former TV critic and commentator for Newsday, fondly reminisced about traveling to Tech on the BMT armed with his slide rule, t-square and brown bag lunch. He confessed that he managed to graduate from Tech with limited manual dexterity and knowledge of engineering, and he has always relied on his wife to change light bulbs. But Tech did teach him a way of thinking that he credits for much of his success.

Also in attendance were alums ranging from fellow Hall of Famer Josh Weston ’46 to a member of the Class of 2001. Brunch organizer Bob Comparato ’59 was especially heartened to see younger faces at the event. Acknowledging that “We won’t be around forever,” he also noted that it is “important for younger people to realize they have a great resource” in the Alumni Foundation. “Being successful has a lot to do with connectivity,” he stated and spoke of the Chapter’s ongoing efforts to recruit younger members from the more than 3,000 alums now living in New Jersey.
