Long Island Chapter Lauds Tech's Past and Present

More than 100 alumni joined Tech faculty and students at the Long Island Marriott on Sunday, October 23rd for the Alumni Foundation’s 21st Annual Long Island Chapter Breakfast. They came to celebrate the distinguished careers of two teachers, pay tribute to the Chapter’s founder and learn about Tech’s latest innovations.

Legendary English and Social Studies teachers Alice and Paul Kaufman respectively were honored by the Chapter for their contributions to Tech. Alice began teaching at Tech in 1966 and retired in 2009; Paul taught from 1958 to 1995. Breakfast organizer and former Tech Assistant Principal Artie Kettenbeil ’67 said “Alice was a wonder and a half, highly professional in every way” and “Paul made history come alive.” Alums playfully groaned when reminded that Paul had run the notorious SOS Service Squad that enforced student discipline. And Alice was lauded for her work as Programming Chair. “They were always there,” said Kettenbeil.

Paul, who married Alice in 1969, simply stated that “Tech made my life.”

Also honored at the breakfast was Vincent De Santi ’42 who passed away recently. Mr. De Santi founded the Long Island Chapter and served as its Treasurer.

Students and faculty members, including Principal Randy Asher and Provost and Physics Chair Randell Barclay, were on hand to discuss exciting changes in Tech’s curriculum. The Tech Expo showed how technology is reshaping teaching and learning and how new facilities like the DNA Lab and the Mock Courtroom have retooled the course majors.

Kettenbeil was pleased with the turnout which included alums from the early 1940’s and a father who brought his daughter who is a member of the Class of 2013. “We get to talk about the past and see what the future is bringing,” said Kettenbeil.
