Football Alumni Show Support at Homecoming Game

History was proudly on display as Tech’s football legends came out to support the 2011 Engineers at the 7th Annual Adam J. Cirillo Classic at Charles B. Wang Field on October 9th.

The past and the present shone brightly on this summer-like day despite a frustrating 20-16 Homecoming loss to the Sheepshead Bay Sharks. The Engineers had valiantly overcome a two touchdown first half deficit to briefly take a 16-14 fourth quarter lead before the Sharks drove in for the winning touchdown. The Engineers were led by their star running back James Gales ’13, who rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown, and receiver Kyvaune Brammer ’13 who made a sparkling 34 yard touchdown catch.

A special halftime celebration honored members of the 1961 PSAL City Championship team. Quarterback Frank Peterson ’62 and his running back brother Art Peterson ’62 received a warm reception from the crowd as did team members Curt Goss ’62, Larry Andres ’62 and Joe Pangia ’64. Quarterback Ira Warheit ’61 was also in attendance.

Former coaches Joe Cuzzocrea and Jim DiBenedetto came to honor the memory of their predecessor, Coach Cirillo and to support the current team and Coach Kyle McKenna. They are the only four head coaches in the Engineers’ storied history.

Also in attendance were Phil Bellino ’73 and Paul Pisano ’74, members of the great 1972 team. Almost 40 years later, Bellino – the team’s captain and quarterback – recalled as if it were yesterday the referee’s controversial call that cost his team the city championship. But the reason he came to Homecoming 2011 was to support the current team and to raise money for the $10,000 Adam J. Cirillo Scholarship, which will be awarded to the team’s most deserving college bound senior.
