John Lyons ’66 has been elected Chairman of The Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation, succeeding Michael Weiss ’57, the board’s founding chairman, who will continue as a board member.
Mr. Lyons, a board member since 2007 and most recently board Secretary, is Assistant Vice President/Director of Broadcast Communication for The Durst Organization.
Also elected were Achilles Perry ’58 as President; Jack Feinstein ’60 and Norm Keller ’54 as Vice Presidents, Carmine Morano ’72 as Treasurer and Sue Mayham ’76 as Secretary.
Founding Treasurer Jeffrey Haitkin ’62 will continue as a board member.
“This year’s election marks a milestone in the growth of the Alumni Foundation,” Mr. Weiss said. “The Alumni Foundation is now a highly successful and effective organization that is a vital part of the Brooklyn Tech community, raising millions of dollars for educational enrichment that public funds cannot provide.
“As the Foundation’s activities continue to expand in new ways, it is the appropriate time for new leadership to emerge and carry on the work of the founders. We are extremely fortunate to have a capable leader in John Lyons, whose record of dedication and service to Brooklyn Tech is unmatched,” Mr. Weiss added.
Mr. Lyons said, “All Technites owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Mike Weiss, Jeffrey Haitkin and the other founding members of the foundation, whose vision and energy led to creation of the most successful public high school alumni group in the nation.
“In today’s challenging climate, it is more important than ever for Tech alumni to stand together and support their school. The Foundation has a strong team in place to ensure that we continue to support the students with additional tools for growth and development,” Mr. Lyons said.
Mr. Lyons’ record of dedication to Tech dates back to his days as a student when he was an SOS lieutenant and winner of the 1966 Service Award, which he says “is still one of my proudest accomplishments.”
Also elected to three-year terms as board members were: Larry Cary '70; Horace Davis '84; Jim DiBenedetto '71; Joe Macchia '73 and Donovan Wickline '88.
