Career Day 2010

Even bright, ambitious students struggle when asked the age old question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” An army of Tech alumni will assemble at Tech to help students explore this pivotal question on February 27th at the Third Annual Career Day.

Alumni of all ages will share thoughts on the rewards and challenges of their chosen occupations in an event that draws hundreds of students to school on a winter Saturday morning.

Career Day is part of an overall Alumni Foundation strategy to create opportunities for alumni to mentor current Technites, and help them make decisions about Tech majors, college plans and potential careers.

Career Day was the brainchild of Young Entrepreneur Association (YEA) founders Awad Sayeed’08 and Jack Li’08. YEA and National Honor Society members have teamed up with Tech and Alumni Foundation staff to organize this year’s event. Last year, 84 Technites made presentations to more than 600 students.

The Alumni Foundation is also collaborating with YEA to offer a job-shadowing program for approximately 200 juniors and seniors during spring break. Students will spend a full day on the job with professional mentors to experience the “real world,” expand networking contacts and see workforce technologies in action.

In addition, the Alumni Foundation is hoping to expand its summer internship program. Last year’s Career Day led to more than two dozen internship placements.

Alumni Foundation CEO Matt Mandery sees these mentoring opportunities as “a direct and powerful way to touch the lives of Tech kids.” Alums who are not able to attend Career Day but are interested in participating in the job-shadowing or internship programs are urged to contact the Alumni Office.
